We are through with the basics, then we can get started now. The MSI Optix MEG381CQR Plus is the first monitor to prove itself in our test. Yes, in terms of naming, all monitor manufacturers are trying to generate their own Da Vinci code. Basically, however, there is a certain logic behind it. MEG (MSI Enthusiast Gaming), 38 refers to the screen diagonal of 38 inches. The 1 means that it is the first generation. The CQR stands for: C = Curved; Q = UWQHD+ resolution (3840 x 1600p) and the R stands for the height-adjustable stand as well as the RGB lighting (front and back). The plus in the name refers to the G-Sync Ultimate module.
One topic is already burning under my fingernails. The monitor is advertised everywhere as 21:9. The sellers also advertise it. With a 38-inch ultrawide with a max resolution of 3840 x 1600p, how do you get 21:9? Anyone who can do the math will come up with 24:10, or alternatively 12:5. Words fail me.
The MEG381CQR+ has a nano IPS panel from LG with RGB subpixel layout (text display – no problem). The panel has 10 bit color depth (8 bit + FRC). 56 edge-lit dimming zones are used to enable HDR. Which are divided into 26 zones above and 26 zones below. But more about that later. The MEG381CQR+ represents the spearhead of MSI’s current monitor lineup. Thus, the top model also has a top price. The MSRP is 2,200 Euros, and you have to let that sink in first. We’ll take a closer look at whether this price is justified in the end today.

The monitor has a wide range of connections, which I like very much. 3x USB type A, jack in/out, etc. It even has a webcam built into the front, which is quite useful for Skype or Teams meetings (if you don’t have one). My first point of criticism is the HDMI ports. The MEG381CQR+ has been on the market for a year and has 2x HDMI 2.0b. For a price of over 2,000 euros MSRP – this is a no-go for me! A second DisplayPort or HDMI 2.1 would be mandatory and not optional. The limitation to only 85 Hz via HDMI 2.0b is not a disaster for pure work on the monitor, but it is still a significant point of criticism.
The USB and jack ports on the side are both practical and annoying. What kind of contradiction is that? Yes, for me the ports are very convenient and a blessing. However, if you have to place a second monitor to the left, you will hardly be able to use the ports. What always works from my point of view are USB dongles (mouse/keyboard/headset). They should not interfere! The OSD menu can be navigated via a small stick on the right back – as is more or less common today. MSI has today’s standard gaming features at the start. Crosshairs, black brighteners, etc., but more on that later.
The RGB lighting on the front and rear are also a nice gimmick. If you like that, you can even use it for your games (steelseries GameSence as a keyword). The small OLED display on the bottom left… Yes, what can I say? In the end, this is one of the gimmicks that makes the monitor so expensive, but doesn’t really bring the added value. It is nice to be able to configure the OLED display (via MSI Center). But do you really need it? This allows you to view the CPU data (utilization, clock rates, etc.). The whole thing also works with the GPU, but unfortunately only with one from MSI. That’s where the hare is in the chase again. Difficult, and therefore not really justifiable!
The workmanship is very good from my point of view. While plastics are predominantly used, that doesn’t mean you’re buying a plastic bomber. On the contrary. The stand can hold the large display securely on the desk. Yes, the display can wobble. Due to its size a little more than expected. But you can’t cheat physics. Leverage law and all… I hope that rings a bell? To trigger this, you have to thunder against it properly. This does not happen when operating the joystick.

What remains to be said about the equipment in the end: The port variety is very good, the HDMI 2.0b ports are critical. A webcam as well as microphone on the front (bottom center) are a nice “nice to have”. The small OLED display and GameSence are unnecessary. The RGB lighting is a matter of taste. But all this is not the essential and that’s where we start now. Next page!

Auf der ersten Seite steht zweimal bei der Pixelzahl "3480 x 1600", aber in den Specs "3840 x 1600". Letzteres ist korrekt, nehme ich an? Finde ich gut, dass auch mal ein Monitortest kommt, obwohl ich selbst lieber beim Format 16:9 (oder, wo noch erhältlich, 16:10) bleibe.
Aber dafür der Rest gut
Was ist bei dem Preis gut? Nix! Und ein Award für die Mitarbeiter? BWL und Marketing gehören auch zu den Mitarbeitern, völlig fehl am Platz so ein Award aus meiner Sicht.
HDR ist echt ein schlechter Witz, aber das ist ja bei allen Monitoren so, wirklich richtig richtig gutes HDR hat meiner Meinung nach immer noch kein einziger Moni (auch nicht der Alienware QD-OLED).
Da geht noch einiges in diesem Bereich…
Wann kommt der MSI QD Oled 34 Zoll - Angekündigt Mai 2022 weiss da unser Redaktuer bitte etwas bereits dazu ?
Ein Kontrast von 700:1 ???. Für mich ist das allein schon – unabhängig vom Preis – ein K.O.-Kriterium. Gute IPS Panels kommen auf über 1.000. Und was den Preis angeht: Für 2.200 € erwarte ich einen OLED-Monitor.
Vermutlich noch im Oktober... Darauf warte ich schon gespannt

Ich habe es nochmal etwas schärfer spezifiziert, sodass klar ist, für wen die Auszeichnung sein soll!
Ein IPS mit über 1000:1 nativ? Das ist schon fast eine Ausnahme... Mit FALD ja, aber hat den Nachteil, dass die Response Times und vor allem der Input lag darunter leiden...
Ohne Kalibrierung liegt er bei 925:1... Mit Augen zudrücken is das noch ok (für IPS)... wer Kontrast will, der kommt um VA oder OLED nicht herum
Also ich persönlich brauche kein HDR am PC. Wenn er als Fernseher-Ersatz benutzt wird okay, aber sonst ist es auf die kurze Distanz einfach zu hell.
Divinity: Original Sind 2 in HDR sieht meiner Meinung nach total gruselig aus. Also unbrauchbar und das auf einem OLED. Mir persönlich ist noch mein HDR Titel auf die Festplatte gekommen. Mag bei Star Wars toll sein, aber für mich kein Must Have.
Ansonsten kann Euch nur zustimmen: So ein Status OLED treibt den Preis bringt aber keinen Mehrwert. Wäre also besser weg geblieben.
Auch eine persönliche Vorlieben, aber ich zum Beispiel schalte selbst die Status Led des Monitors ab - oder klebe Isolierband drüber, wenn es nicht anders geht.
Ich würde mir wünschen, dass der Monitor am Markt gut ankommt, auch wenn er auf das Buzzword HDR verzichten muss. Wirklich bewusst wird einem das ja auch nur dann, wenn man einen SDR neben einen HDR Monitor stellt und direkt vergleicht. Ansonsten freut man sich einfach über die tollen Farben.
Die Monitore machen ja auch so große Fortschritte. Seit meinem ersten Flachbildmomitor (NEC) mit 1280*1024 habe ich 3 Mal gewechselt. Ein EIZO FullHD, Asus WQHD und jetzt Gigabyte M32U. Jedes Mal war das bei der Bildqualität ein riesen Unterschied. Der M32U hat zwar HDR, ist bei mir aber immer aus...
38" mit 3840x1600 ist 24:10 und nicht 21:9
HDR kann geil aussehen.. Aber ohne extrem viele Dimmung Zonen oder selbstleuchtende Pixel (oleds) kann man das leider vergessen.. Da muss sich zur Zeit jedes Display mit nem LG oled oder den neuen QD-Oleds messen .. Und selbst für einen Straßenpreis von 1600€ empfinde ich den lg Fernseher in der Größe die bessere Wahl.
Mal schauen was der MSI QD-Oleds so drauf hat.. Alienware hat's mit dem g-sync Modul, Lüfter und Anschlüssen verkackt.. Und Samsung mit dem Media Hub +Mini Design Anschlüssen die das Gerät nur unnötig teuerer machen
Bei mir wäre ein QD-Oled mit freesync ultimate, HDMI 2.1/neuester Displayport Anschluss Und ohne irgendwelche Zusatzdinger die den Preis unnötig in die Höhe treiben für 1000€ ein absoluter No-brainer der sich wie geschnitten Brot verkaufen würde
Das habe ich gleich auf der ersten Seite im Artikel kritisiert... marketing völlig ahnungslos
Über die komische (und rechnerisch falsche) Angabe von MSI zum Seitenverhältnis 21:9 habe ich auch gerätselt. Rechnerisch sind es 21,6:9 (= 2,40)
Hinter der Umrechnung des Seitenverhältnisses auf „x:9“ steckte vielleicht folgende Idee: Jeder kennt doch das Seitenverhältnis 16:9 (= 1,78) vom Fernseher und von Monitoren (1920:1080, 2560:1440, 3840:2160 sind alle umgerechnet 16:9 = 1,78). Und da kann man sich ganz gut vorstellen, wieviel größer der Sehwinkel bei 21,6:9 ist. Aber 21,6:9 war wohl nicht marketingtauglich.
Natürlich wäre es einfacher gewesen wenn MSI gesagt hätte, das Seitenverhältnis des MSI-Monitors ist 2,40 im Gegensatz zu 1,78 bei UHD.
