I love an exposed Edison light bulb. I recently redid my kitchen , and while I love the fixture, I really don’t like the bulbs. I prefer a shockingly bright bulb, but my guests definitely don’t and felt comfortable saying so. Then I felt self-conscious about my bulbs and have since been on a hunt for a warmer light bulb that is still bright and Edison-style.

I’m absolutely not going to get into the science of the Kelvin temperature colour scale, just how it’s applied to the colour of light bulbs. The Kelvin (K) scale of colour temperature is measured on a scale from 1,000 to 10,000. Generally, the higher the number, the whiter the light. Most residential bulbs are between 2,000 and 6,500K.

An Edison bulb is meant to look like the original Thomas Edison invention, so the filament is visible. Edison bulbs are trendy, interesting and can be unique. But they are also jarring because the glass is clear and the light isn’t filtered.

I originally used 5,000K bulbs and then visitors compared my place to sterile doctor’ and dentist’ offices. I still like to see at night, so I didn’t want to go down to a 3,000K bulb, so I focused on a 4,000K search. But I couldn’t find them at any hardware store or any physical store, for that matter.

I did end up finding these beauties on Amazon and they’re perfect. They’re bright, warm and welcoming. It comes in a pack of six for $40, which seems to be a good price for Edison bulbs. The bulbs also come in warmer colours and are available in dimmable.
