EMUI 11 is a revamped version of EMUI 10.0 and 10.1 and it comes with substantial improvements over the predecessor. However, EMUI 12 is something new and we’ll conduct a comparison series between EMUI 12 and EMUI 11 before EMUI 13 comes out. For this, we’ll first look into the changes that have been made to the EMUI quick settings or control panel and check out the differences.

Time to dive in. EMUI 11: Quick Settings

EMUI 11 quick settings have the traditional quick access icons with a switch feature, which you can enable or disable with a tap. Other than that, you can also change the brightness level through the slider.

Furthermore, the notification panel is attached to the quick settings. Similar to the last version, the EMUI 11 also comes with various customization features to add/remove icons.Advertisement

The panel has a soft background color that helps you differentiate between the icon and the background.

EMUI 12 comes with a brand new Control Panel, which is a combination of various services in one place. The Control panel includes a media controller, and smart device manager that helps you connect and control devices such as tablets, FreeBuds, and Smartwatches.

That’s not it, Huawei has retained the quick settings icons from EMUI 11 and added them inside the control panel.

The EMUI 12 control panel has a better appearance with lots of new features. On the flip side, you can edit the switches or disable the smart device panel as per your preference.Advertisement

We’ll soon bring you the next comparison, until then stay connected.

App icons are there to identify an app and allow you to open it with a tap. However, these app icons are different in each software and we’ll be going to conduct a comparison altogether.

For this app icons comparison, we’ve picked some of the most popular and used mobile software – iOS and custom Android skins from Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Oppo including EMUI, One UI, OxygenOS, MIUI respectively, and more.

We’ve also included stock Android 13 in this race, so you’ll be able to review it as well. One UI:

One UI is the official sponsor of Android and it’s One UI 5.0 has not changed a bit. In terms of exploration, the icons are colorful and consist of white icons and solid colors. The icons have a background shape of a rounded rectangle.Advertisement

This Android skin also has Android apps, and their icons look way better on white backgrounds as compared to Samsung’s own apps.

Time to move on to Huawei and its latest global software – EMUI 12, we’ve not included HarmonyOS 2 because it shares the same icon measurements. EMUI 12 app icons have 3D effects in icons such as Settings, which looks very interactive. Also, other icons such as the camera is clearly visible to the user.

On the other hand, solid icons such as Message, dialer, and AppGallery also have finishings with light and dark color combinations. That looks better.

Huawei phones don’t come with Google apps, yet the app icon design hits right into the focus.Advertisement

iOS is a self-originator and it has indirectly taught many Android phone makers how to create app icons. It’s not praised but it’s reality, iOS app icons are balanced while mixing – contrast, dark colors, and the logo of the icon, and the result of this sum results in a shape and easy-to-find icon design.

The one that I’ve seen on iOS reflects when the device installs software update and the Settings icon animations accordingly. It looks realistic, as it is.

OnePlus has a design inspired by stock Android, simple and plain throughout the user interface (UI). However, OxygenOS 13 is different and Material You has helped OnePlus to create new aesthetics for the users.

Let’s come to the icons, Yes, icons are sharp and the background shape of each icon is filled decently and looks sharp. Throughout the UI, the camera icon has really got my attention.Advertisement

Next comes MIUI, Xiaomi has decided to put its app icons inside a rounded rectangle, which creates a subtle effect in visibility and brings in a good feel of interaction. Meanwhile, most of the app section is filled with Google apps such as phone, message, and chrome.

Therefore, MIUI app icons also fall into the good category.

The beginning of all of the custom Android software skins is called Stock Android and the icons are plain and simple, while Android app icons remain in the middle of all user experiences and suit best all smartphone users.

However, the one thing that could not go unmentioned comes under dynamic icons that allow you to change the entire app icons into two-color scheme that has a separate impact on the user and it looks marvelous.Advertisement

Other Android phone makers will also come with dynamic icons but no one can do this better than stock Android.

Dark Mode is a feature that we all love to use and it nowadays works on all major smartphones but appears a bit different. Therefore a comparison between Huawei EMUI 12, HarmonyOS 2 vs Stock Google Android 12 vs Samsung One UI 4.1 vs Apple iOS 15, and Xiaomi MIUI 13 for dark mode feature has been arranged to see the changes these softwares bring to the most common parts of the user interface. Dark Mode:

Dark Mode is a feature that is now available as part of Android, HarmonyOS, and iOS software. The feature helps you to apply a darker color scheme over the light interface to prevent eye strain in low light conditions. On the flip side, the dark mode also saves battery.

What are we gonna do?

Below, we’ll examine each of the smartphone software in their dark mode for the given part of the user interface:Advertisement Quick Settings Settings Menu Dialer

As we use them the most in our day-to-day operations of smartphones.

Without further due, let’s begin our Huawei EMUI 12 vs HarmonyOS 2 vs Stock Google Android 12 vs Samsung One UI 4.1 vs Apple iOS 15 and Xiaomi MIUI 13 dark mode comparison. EMUI 12:

In comparison to the last generation, EMUI 12 has good dark mode effects throughout the user interface, the use of dark gray and subtle black looks amazing. The use of light color icon background is really helpful and doesn’t shade much of the contrast if you look over them. Unlike the Control Panel shortcut switches, Huawei has tried to keep the user interface adequate contrast, which makes it very easy to adapt for long hours use case scenarios.

The user interface used in EMUI 12 is derived from HarmonyOS 2.0 and they both are identical. check the screenshot below.

Stock Android 12 has brought a lot of new changes in the user interface, quick settings tile system, and material you design. The user interface is surely intriguing and easy to navigate but by default, the quick settings tiles on the stock Android 12 maintain dark mode. Once enabled a dark gray color is applied to the Settings menu. Moving on, the software uses Google’s Phone app’s dialer, which is also used by Xiaomi in MIUI 13. The overall look and feel of the Android 12 dark mode is satisfying. Yet, everyone is free to try the Material you dynamic theme for maximized user experience.Advertisement

Samsung has been one of the best players when it comes to the dark mode features, the phone maker has introduced this feature on One UI, even before it came by default on the Android project.

The One UI 4.1 has further enhanced the accuracy and the color balance between foreground and background colors in the user interface elements. You will find these changes throughout the user interface.

Such as the Settings menu, you’ll find the shape of the background used in the menu items feels encompassing with the icon as well as the text label. Meanwhile, the use of a high tone on the dialer is perfect to know which button you are pressing to dial your calls.

The overall appearance of the Samsung One UI 4.1 dark mode is comfortable to the eye and it deserves praise.Advertisement

In iOS 15, Apple has kept the control center sleek, which looks the same once the dark mode is enabled or disabled. Yet, the translucent background changes along with the wallpapers once you apply the dark mode to the phone.

Moving on, iOS 15 has brought in the round shapes in the background of Settings menu options, which is a nice touch to look in dark mode and had a sharp appearance in the predecessor.

The color in the icons is also crafted with care as they remain the same in the light theme.

Despite its short search screen, I like the way, Apple has designed the round number pad on iOS, it is still, one of the best dialers that looks simple and elegant in dark mode.Advertisement

The dark mode feature on MIUI devices looks decent. Once you tap on dark mode, the phone tries to maintain the color composition and it seems like it is fighting to showcase the changes from the light theme.

The appearance of MIUI 13 dark mode is not supported by its font system, which is a kind of a bummer. As mentioned above, the software is keen to use the Google phone app on the global market, which is a good choice to go with for phone calls.

The overall look of MIUI 13 is decent but not good nor above.
