Gamers and streamers can rejoice as there is yet another RGB solution that you can run around that sweet setup of yours. Cololight isn’t a new option, but the company has been making enhancements when it comes to integration, resulting in the Cololight Hexagon Light Plus Kit that can work with a number of ecosystems.

This is a full RGB solution that can be both desk-mounted as a lamp or wall-mounted as decor. Like similar products from companies like Nanoleaf, Lifx, and Monster, these are modular units that can be pieced together in whatever geometrical design you want (at least, anything that can be constructed flat using hexagon-shaped pieces).

The kit comes with a base, controller, and seven light modules to get started with. From there, you can expand on it with a virtually unlimited number of modules (although, I’m sure at some point you will hit a limit to the amount of power the controller can provide).

If using the base, it could stand up straight on a flat surface (i.e., a desk). Else, there are optional wall plates that you can buy that snap into the back of the modules allowing you to create art all over your wall space.

These optional wall plates are easy to work with since they maintain the shape and distance of the modules. So you can build a pattern on the wall using the mounting plates, screwing these in everywhere. Then snap each module into place with the connectors that run in between each of them.

There are two types of connectors. The larger ones (above image) bring data between each of the modules and then the shorter ones are simply there to help add support (these are called “fixators”). Each module only needs one data connector feeding it and then running to the next one. All other sides of the hexagon can use the fixators.

You can see in the above image that each module only has one side that has two ports (this is the side that it is receiving data from). Then any of the single port sides is able to send data to the next one (the next one using its two-port side).

The end result can be whatever shape you want, including multiple runs of these lights if you have enough controllers (as seen in the main image at the top of the story).

What’s even better is that they can all interact with each other if you have multiple light formations set up. not only that, but they can also interact with other smart light formations from other brands, as long as they support the same interactions.

This is where these get interesting. By themselves, they are just stand-alone, color-changing, customizable, RGB lighting solutions. However, the company has been working to expand on its integrations with other services, which opens them to interact with other products and ecosystems. These integrations include support for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and HomeKit to name a few. These alone open these products to interest with a huge selection of brands and models. allowing you to not only build these into your desk setup but into your smart home setup as well.

If someone rings the doorbell, it should be easy to make these react somehow using one of these options. It moves further from there as Cololight just rolled out its integration with Razer’s Chroma software as well. Allowing these lights to interact with other products that support the software.

You can tell that Cololight plans on sticking around for a while with the amount of effort the company is putting into everything. Thankfully, it may not end there as the company may eventually roll out IFTTT support as well, which could help extend it to other online services like social media and other smart home ecosystems. Maybe one day you will be able to get these to flash blue every time someone Tweets about you.

You can, of course, dig deeper into your connectivity options by using these integrations to interact with much deeper systems like Samsung’s SmartThings or Home Assistant. These may be a little more tricky depending on how you handle the handshake between one of these and one of the integrations these lights support. However, if the thought crosses your mind, you likely already know what you’re in for.

With all of these integrations, it is possible to get these lights to do just about anything you want them to. This leaves you with so many possibilities, allowing you to tap into your inner geek and really have fun. We can see ourselves playing with these later on while testing some bridged interactions between some of these ecosystems, so you might see these lights pop up from time to time as we do so.

It is nice to see a smart product that is actually smart. Not only that but to truly become even smarter as a company continues to support it with new features. These lights have a lot of potential and we look forward to seeing where Cololight goes with everything in the future. They are a bit expensive though, so they will be limited to a certain niche of buyers who have this kind of budget lying around. If you plan to expand onto these with many other modules and light options, it could cost hundreds of dollars. So just keep this in mind so you are prepared for what’s to come. This is normal for all of these brands, therefore this isn’t anything new.
